Don’t let your car seat end up in landfill. BE SEATSMART!

Recycle your car seat with Baby On The Move and SeatSmart today!

Every year 100,000 car seats expire in New Zealand. That’s 500 tonnes of plastic, metal, webbing, textiles that head straight for the landfill!

The SeatSmart project was launched in 2016 by the 3R Group, a NZ company who are passionate about re-thinking waste and reducing the environmental impact of products over their lifetime. They focus on items that generally fall into the “too hard” basket and work with individual companies or industry players to find solutions. Baby On The Move is proud to be a retail supporter, and to help remove expired and damaged car seats from our communities.

Where do I take my expired or damaged car seat for recycling?

Every Baby On The Move store is a SeatSmart collection point, and SeatSmart has 39 collection points nationwide.

What seats do SeatSmart accept?

Any brand of booster, convertible seat or capsule. Sorry no polystyrene seats, capsule wheels or other car seat accessories are accepted.

Is there a cost to recycle the seats?

A small fee of $35 per car seat covers the cost of collection and dismantling, which is a similar cost of sending the seat to landfill, however with a much better outcome! There are also many local councils who subsidise this fee in order to reduce local landfill waste. Please check with your nearest store for more details.

For insurance claims through Baby On The Move, partners with IAG Insurance, the cost to recycle the damaged seats are covered under your insurance claim. Please read more about this HERE

What happens to the seats?

The seats are dismantled by Social Enterprise – a paid service that provides employment for people who have a disability or are disadvantaged or marginalised.

Dismantling work is also done by Department of Corrections as part of their community work programs which provide opportunities for offenders to make amends to their communities, and learn new skills and work habits.

Then the majority of plastic is able to be recycled into products for the building industry. Metal parts are simply taken to metal recyclers, and the harnesses are used in the production of Karkt recycled bags.

SeatSmart also aims to find end uses for the materials that are currently non-recyclable like the fabric covers, polystyrene, foams and buckles.
